Mod Betty's been hard pressed to unearth the Retro-Roadmap-worthy places in our Nations Capitol - but when she spied a photo of some glorious vintage looking neon in a Flickr photo it unearthed a find - the Tune Inn!
Off The Corner - They're just off the corner of Pennsylvania Ave and 4th Street.
On The Square - That corner of Pennsylvania Ave and 4th is on Seward Square!
While it's not an Inn, and the only tunes we heard were from the jukebox playing in the background, this was a place we warmed to immediately. It seemed like a locals hang, but we felt welcomed as we entered the narrow space.
Luckily the fire didn't decimate the entire place and the owners wisely kept the same look and feel (a plus in Mod B's book) - even ordering replacement booths and tables of the same model as the ones damaged by the fire.
Scooting by the bar that lines the front left wall we opted to seat ourselves in one of the aforementioned booths, just under the glow of the antler-chandelier (antlerdier? nah ;-))
Taxidermied bear, fish and deer are line the wood paneling, interspersed with framed photos and articles about the biz and notable characters and pals. Alas, the inevitable multiple TV screens are there as the ever present 21st century distraction (a minus in Mod B's book.)
We really just came in for a quick bite and drink, and got exactly that. The beer offering is more impressive than your standard dive bar, (but that is to be expected since to me this isn't really a dive, imho.)
And food-wise if fried is what you like, then you're in the right place! ( Fried is one of Mod Betty's favorite food groups!)
Not kidding when I say that I'm still hankering for more of the fried mac and cheese triangles that we started with. Fresh out of the fryer they were that perfect combo of crunchy and tender, and laden with salty, cheezy flavor.
Retro Roadhusband did get their "famous" deep fried cheeseburger but that was a bit too much fried for us. However there are plenty of other fun bar grub type things on the menu - including breakfast served all day - to keep you fat and happy.
So in a city where finding an authentic Retro Roadmap worthy place for regular folks is about has hard as finding and honest politician (har har!) it's good to know that the Tune Inn is still around, welcoming all.
