Union Station in downtown Nashville TN is one of a handful of beautiful old train stations converted into hotel space (remember the Lackawanna Train Station Hotel in Scranton we went to a few months back?)
Built in 1900 it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977. It's quite a grand sight along popular Broadway in Downtown Music City USA.
While RetroRoadhusband and I were not able to stay at Union Station the folks there were very gracious in letting me snap a few photos, and gave me some brochures detailing the amenities of this luxury Wyndham Grand Hotel (also one of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's designated Historic Hotels). You can tell the scale of the architecture by just looking at how dwarfed RetroRoadhusband is when compared to the fireplace and clock above!
The glass ceiling is quite breathtaking, and is described as the "65-foot, barrel-vaulted lobby ceiling, featuring gold-leaf medallions and 100-year-old, original Luminous Prism stained glass."
Once you see it in person it definitely leaves an impression, which is why I thought that the book I was researching at work this week looked so familiar....
So when I was given the chance to contact the author I added a question about the cover photo. Mr. Sheffield was quick to reply with the information I needed business-wise, but added that the photo on the front cover was indeed the vaulted ceiling of Union Station in Nashville, where he enjoys staying when he's in the area.
I was RIGHT! :-) - and if you don't believe me, check out the hotel for yourself next time you're in Nashville.
