When I think of Ocean City the first thing that comes to mind is their summer boardwalk. But I was delighted to discover that it has its very own downtown with many independent businesses open year round. Here are a few vintage faves, all within close walking distance of each other:
Hoy’s 5 & 10 732 Asbury Ave.
Look for the cheery red facade! Established in 1935 and still family run, this is the place to get your beach needs, souvenirs and household items. Conveniently right next door to Wards Pastry! https://www.hoys510.com/
Rauhauser's Own Make Candies 721 Asbury Ave.
Across the street from Hoy’s, Rauhauser's has been making their own chocolates here since 1965. Run by the 3rd generation, they’re famous for their blueberry clusters made with Hammonton blueberries when in season. http://rauhausers.com
Ready’s Coffee Shop 415 E 8th St.
Just around the corner from Hoys, look for the neon sign for Ready’s Coffee Shop, serving breakfast and lunch since 1962. Sit in a booth or at the counter, and dig the knotty pine paneling, wagon wheel lights, and tasty food. https://www.facebook.com/Readys-Coffee-Shop-Restaurant-108859579137407/
Wards Pastry 730 Asbury Ave.
A German bakery that has been here since the 1920s, I’m smitten with their large vintage cookie jar collection. But the real draw here is their Scrapple Pie-! Try it - if you dare. http://wardspastry.com/
Mod Betty Says:
Note that the scrapple pie is best heated up, so bring your cooler and heat/eat at home
There are 4 Hoy’s locations along the shore - look for the neon sign at the one on West Ave in town
Ready’s and Wards are cash only so come prepared - and tip heavy!
