ROUTE 66 DINER of Springfield, Massachusetts
By Joe and Anna Butrim
Having traveled all 2,448 miles of the Mother Road (Route 66) from Chicago to Santa Monica, our hearts skipped a beat when we stumbled upon this gem of a Mountain View diner known as the Route 66 Diner in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Built in the Township of Little Falls, New Jersey in 1957, it was shipped here the same year, and it's believed to be the second to last diner made by Mountain View before their operations had ceased later that year.
Originally named the New Bay Diner Restaurant, the diner was acquired by Donald Roy in 1988 and the name was changed to the Route 66 Diner. In December of 2003, the diner was added to the National Register of Historic places. How COOL is that?
After a few oooo's and ahhhh's and a few photographs we went inside for some breakfast.
"Oh my gosh! Route 66 people!" were the first words from our waitress who spotted the Route 66 t-shirts we both were wearing. "See? Route 66 people really DO exist!".
I guess they don't get many, if any, Route 66 roadies walking through their front door.
After a few photos of the inside, we settled in and ordered up some bacon and eggs, toast and coffee. We had a long drive ahead of us to get back to Maryland, so we thought it best to avoid a BIG breakfast that might slow us down.
The breakfast was typical, warm, and good. Being so excited about finding this Route 66 Diner, we didn't even think to take some photos of the food, so you'll have to forgive us. But ya'll know what bacon, eggs, and toast looks like anyway, right?
The diner sports several jukeboxes with STEREO SPEAKERS, both on the counter and in the booths.
They are a CASH ONLY diner, but there is an ATM inside just in case.
After a good breakfast and some chat with our swell waitress, it was time to bid farewell and head on out. After a few more photos outside, and some more ooo's and ahhh's of the neon, we were back on the road again.
Thanks Route 66 Diner for a great way to start our day before our long journey home.
