Retro Roadmap Weekend- Wildwood New Jersey bound!

This holiday weekend will find your hostess on a Retro Roadmap Roadtrip (my fave!) as she heads down to “The Shore” for a weekend in that wonderful place Wildwood, New Jersey.

The Wildwoods

Wildwood has probably more Mid Century Modern motels and signs than any place on the Eastern seaboard, and a visit is well overdue. My last stay there was close to 15 years ago (this was before the internet, kiddies– I had heard about Wildwood as a member of the Society for Commercial Archeology and made the 6.5 hour drive down on their recommendation alone!)

It wouldn’t be a Retro Roadmap Roadtrip if I didn’t plan on making a ton of stops both to and fro, as Hillis will attest.

If all works out as planned I should be able to post about New Jersey’s last surviving Drive In Movie Theatre, Roadside Root Beer Stands, Diners, Frozen Custard and “treasures yet to find”. Can’t Wait!

Have you got some fun holiday weekend plans? Share them in the comments section!

  1. While in Wildwood, you have to stay at the Caribbean Motel. It looks like it’s right out of the Jetsons, with a curved ramp and gorgeous neon sign. Recently renovated in retro style with leopard print fabrics, it’s simply the only real place to stay at the Jersey shore.

We go every year and lounge in the warm saline pool under the plastic palm trees. They have a gas grill you can use and a mini fridge in every room.

  2. May I link to this specific post for the next issue of A Festival of Postcards which is dedicated to “Signs”.
Even though our focus is on postcards, I think lots of Festival readers would love to pore through your photographs of vintage signs.

  3. It looks really very like Blackpool in the UK. I’m sure I have some cards from a similar date though there wouldn’t be any motel signs.

From what I’ve read about and seen of Blackpool in the movies, I think it is similar. Or was similar, as everything seems to get updated whether we want it to or not!

  4. We invite you to visit the truly unique vacation spot, the Wildwoods. It is a great family vacation spot and a must visit on the east coast. You will love it here!!!!!!

  5. My Dear Retro Roadmap Readers –

In an effort to reduce comment spam by bots on my site, I’ve closed the comments on this post.

But the last thing I want to see happen is that it stops the conversation on this topic, especially if you have something you want to add!

So if you want to comment on this post all you have to do is email me at modbetty AT retroroadmap DOT com and let me know what you want to say and what post it goes with. I’ll make sure your info gets matched up and added to the conversation!

Mod Betty specializes in photographs of vintage roadside signs but for the Festival she’s sharing this vintage postcard of vintage postcard of New Jersey. [...]
